Field Marshal Sir Claude Auchinleck

Auchinleck was unable to build on his success at Alamein, and one month later he was replaced as C–in–C Middle East by General Harold Alexander, and as Eighth Army commander by Lt–Gen William Gott. Gott was killed in an air crash on his way to take up his command, and Lt–Gen Bernard Montgomery was appointed in his place.
